How to Join
New Hartford Fire Department is always looking for high caliber individuals interested in volunteering. We are always accepting applications for firefighters, fire police, auxiliary personnel, and cadet members. Anyone over age fifteen can apply. Members are offered a host of incentives for their time. Come join our family!
New Hartford Fire Department has the following membership classifications:
Interior Firefighter: In order to become an interior firefighter the member must be over 18 years of age and complete the state firefighter I test. This class is held at the Burrville Fire School in Torrington in the fall and spring. It usually is twice a week and a few weekends. This membership class must also undergo a physical including an EKG
Exterior Firefighter: An exterior firefighter is a member who assists fire-ground functions. They may assist with rescues or help outside of structure fires. Exterior firefighters must be over 18 years of age and pass a physical before they can become active.
Fire Police: These members keep the firefighters safe on scenes. They use the Brush Unit or their personal vehicle to divert traffic keeping the scene clear. Fire Police are required to undergo a yearly physical.
Cadets: New Hartford Fire Department offers a Junior Firefighting Program for 15-18 year olds residing within the district. These members go through a firefighting physical and train with the department. They are restricted in what firefighting they can do based on CT labor laws. Cadet members may respond to calls when they are out of school and not past 10pm.
To Join stop by either firehouse on a Monday night between 6pm and 9pm or call the firehouse at 860-379-4936 between 8am and 3pm Monday through Friday
